Talks over the Kurds' place in post-Assad Syria have moved to direct contact: after hosting Iraqi Kurdish leader Nechirvan Barzani on Monday, Ahmed al-Sharaa met Kurdish commander Mazloum Abdi, The National reported on Tuesday, with integration into the state unresolved.

Since the fall of Bashar al-Assad, Syria's new leadership under President Ahmed al-Sharaa has been working out the place of the country's Kurds in the new state, with the future of the Kurdish YPG militia the central question. Iraq's Kurdistan Regional Government, led by Nechirvan Barzani, is a neighbouring party to that process.
