Ukraine hits refineries deep inside Russia in mass drone attack

Ukraine struck oil facilities deep inside Russia overnight into Thursday, setting the Yaroslavneftorgsintez refinery in Yaroslavl on fire. Russia's Defence Ministry said air defences downed 605 drones over Russian regions, occupied Crimea and the Black and Azov seas.

What happened

Zelenskyy said Ukrainian forces also hit a refinery in Bashkortostan, more than 1,300 kilometres behind the front line in eastern Ukraine.
Yaroslavl governor Mikhail Evraev reported the region's largest drone attack, with air defence and electronic warfare units destroying 88 drones.
Evraev said the attack destroyed a private house, shattered windows in apartment buildings and damaged cars, with no casualties.
Tver governor Vitaly Korolev said drone debris slightly damaged a Wildberries logistics complex facade; another warehouse wall was hit on 4 August.
Zelenskyy also reported strikes on two Russian patrol boats and on shadow fleet vessels in the Black Sea, without details.

The view from outside

The Associated Press, carried by Turkey's Daily Sabah, sets the strikes against Russian drone and glide bomb attacks that killed at least three civilians in Ukraine the same night. It adds that the Iran war has drained Patriot interceptor stocks, leaving Kyiv's air defences weakened, a context Russian outlets omit.

What could happen next

Yaroslavneftorgsintez, Russia's fifth-largest refinery by capacity, has been struck at least six times since the start of 2026, Meduza reports.
Evraev gave no explanation for the intense fires over Yaroslavl; Wildberries has not commented on the damage in Tver.
Kyiv is seeking interceptor missiles from partners; Zelenskyy discussed stockpiles with NATO's Mark Rutte and Finland's Alexander Stubb.
