Netanyahu says Israel did not agree to US-backed Gaza plan

In a video posted on Tuesday night, Netanyahu said Israel never agreed to the US-backed draft on Hamas disarmament. He ruled out leaving Israeli positions in Gaza until Hamas is fully disarmed.

What happened

  • Netanyahu met the Board of Peace's top diplomat, Nickolay Mladenov, in Jerusalem on Monday, 3 August.
  • He received guarantees that the army would leave its current positions in Gaza only after Hamas disarms.
  • Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich and Settlement Minister Orit Strook requested a new vote on the plan on Tuesday.
  • The security cabinet, in which both sit, had already approved the proposal, including international peacekeeping troops in Gaza.
  • A cabinet session planned for Tuesday was pushed to Thursday, during Likud primaries before the 27 October election.

The view from outside

The National (UAE) notes the deal was negotiated over months between Hamas, the Board of Peace and mediator countries, with Israel not at the table.

Daily Sabah (Turkey) quotes Molad researcher Tal Elovits calling the ministers' demand a campaign move, and arguing Israel's isolation leaves it no way to discard the plan.

  • Open whether Thursday's security cabinet reopens the vote its members already passed.
  • Sequencing is contested: the plan foresees Israeli pullbacks as Hamas begins handing over weapons, not after full disarmament.
