Russian campaign against Moldova detailed as Poland detains murder-plot suspect

The New York Times reported on Saturday that Russia ran a covert campaign against Moldova's pro-Western government. Poland said a day earlier that it had detained a man recruited by Russian intelligence for a planned killing.

The paper describes payments to Orthodox priests, a vote-buying scheme and training camps on election interference, all aimed at the government in Chisinau. No further detail from the investigation was available for this edition. Moldova's government approved a program on Wednesday, 5 August to implement its National Defence Strategy for 2026-2030, raising military spending to 1 percent of GDP, according to Russia's Foreign Ministry.

Warsaw: a detention and a shifting target

Prime Minister Donald Tusk said on Thursday, 13 August that Poland had detained a Russian citizen recruited by Russian intelligence for a killing, and that the target held Ukrainian and US passports. RMF FM first reported the target was a defence-industry entrepreneur supplying Ukraine, then said on Friday that the plot was aimed at Ukrainian rapper Albert Vasyliev, known as Kyivstoner.

Moscow's earlier accusation

The FSB said in mid-July it had thwarted a drone attack on a plant in the Moscow region planned by Ukraine's Security Service and alleged that Vasyliev helped organise it; he rejected the claim.

TASS left the allegations out of its Moldova coverage on Friday, quoting Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova instead on an economy in decline.
